Privacy policy

1. Introduction

Glance ("we", "our") is an Australian news aggregation app. This policy describes how we handle information when you use the Glance app and related services.

2. How Glance serves news

Glance does not write the news. We pull headlines and short summaries from the RSS feeds of well-known Australian and international news outlets (such as the ABC, Guardian Australia, SBS, and others — see Our sources). RSS is a standard way publishers make their headlines and summaries available for apps and readers. We show you these in one place so you can swipe through, pick a story, and tap to read the full article. When you tap a story, you are taken to that publisher’s own website. We do not host or rewrite the articles; we only collect and display the headlines and links from their RSS feeds in a simple, easy-to-use format.

3. Information we collect

We may collect or process:

  • Device notification token – If you turn on notifications, we store a token that lets us send you breaking-news alerts. We keep this only so we can deliver those alerts and do not use it for anything else.
  • Saved articles – When you save a story, the link is stored on your device only. We do not keep your saved list on our servers unless we clearly say so in the future.
  • Listen mode & article audio – To create listenable versions of stories, we process the article headline and short summary (and similar text from our feed) with text-to-speech services. See section 6 below.
  • Glance AI (Ask Glance AI) – If you use in-app AI Q&A, we receive your questions and the article context you are viewing. See section 7 below.
  • General usage – We may keep basic logs (such as when the app is used) to run and protect the service. We do not sell this information.

4. How we use information

We use the notification token only to send you the alerts you have chosen. We use logs to run and protect the service. Audio and AI features use the information described in sections 6 and 7 only to provide those features. We do not use your data for advertising or to build a profile about you.

5. Third parties

The news you see comes from other publishers (see Our sources). When you tap an article, you leave Glance and go to that publisher’s website, which has its own privacy policy.

We use hosting, cloud storage, content delivery (for example audio files), notification delivery, text-to-speech providers (such as Google Cloud and/or OpenAI, depending on configuration), and AI model providers (such as OpenAI and/or Anthropic) to run Glance, generate article audio, and power Glance AI. Those providers process data according to their own policies and our instructions, only as needed to provide the service.

6. Listen mode & article audio

Listen mode lets you hear stories read aloud. To do this, we send the relevant headline and summary text (from our feed or a short summary we hold for that article) to a text-to-speech (TTS) service, which returns audio. We may store the resulting audio file on our infrastructure (for example cloud storage and a CDN) so it can be streamed to your device efficiently. We do not record your voice and we do not use listen mode to identify you beyond normal server logs.

If generated audio is not available for a story, the app may use your device’s built-in speech synthesis instead; in that case processing happens on your device under your operating system’s rules.

7. Glance AI (Ask Glance AI)

When you use Ask Glance AI (or similar) inside an article, the app sends a request to our servers that typically includes: an article identifier, the article title, the short summary shown in Glance, your question, optionally the article URL so we can try to load public text from the publisher’s page to improve the answer, and recent messages in that chat thread so follow-up questions make sense. We send that payload to an AI model (via providers such as OpenAI or Anthropic) to generate a reply shown in the app.

We do not use Glance AI chats to train third-party models. Processing is for answering your question in the moment. We may keep short-term server logs (for example to prevent abuse, fix errors, or measure load). We do not maintain a permanent “chat history” tied to your account on our servers for this feature unless we tell you otherwise in the future.

Do not paste highly sensitive personal information into Glance AI. Answers are generated automatically and may be inaccurate; always check important facts on the publisher’s site.

8. Your rights

You can turn off notifications in your device settings, which stops us from sending you alerts. If we hold other personal data and you are in a jurisdiction that grants access or deletion rights, contact us and we will respond in line with applicable law.

9. Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes means you accept the updated policy.

10. Contact

For privacy-related questions, contact us through the channels provided in the Glance app or on this website.
