NSW custody deaths surge to 66 as Indigenous deaths hit record high
New South Wales recorded 66 deaths in custody and police operations in 2025, up 18 from the previous year, according to a coroner's report released Thursday. Nearly a quarter of prisoner deaths were classified as intentional self-harm, primarily by hanging despite millions invested to remove ligature points. Indigenous deaths in custody hit a record 12.
