Smoking rates higher in poorer, regional areas despite hefty tobacco excise tax
One in three residents in poorer outer suburbs and regional areas are daily smokers, despite increased tobacco taxes. Kingston and Yennora reported smoking rates of 36.5 percent and 36.4 percent respectively in 2022. Health experts link higher rates to a growing black market in illicit tobacco, undermining tax efforts to reduce smoking prevalence.
