A magnitude-5.5 earthquake struck Amata in the early hours of Sunday, waking residents across the APY Lands. Senior seismologist Jonathan Bathgate likened the quake to the devastating 1989 Newcastle earthquake. Several aftershocks followed, though only those near the epicenter felt their effects.
