Dominique Bikaba, 54, has dedicated his life to protecting gorillas and communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo amid ongoing conflict. Founder of Strong Roots Congo, he began conservation efforts in 1992, advocating for coexistence between displaced families and wildlife. The eastern lowland gorilla population has dwindled from an estimated 17,000 before conflict to about 3,800 in 2016.
